The magic worLd of Massa Marittima
in Maremma: deceleration
The closest village to La Concordia is Ghirlanda, a small community about seven minutes by car from La Concordia. In Ghirlanda you will find a bike shop, a traditional Pizzeria with an adjacent shop where you can choose from a basic selection of food and wine. There is also Bracali, the only Guide Michelin starred restaurant that you will find in the area.
The hill town of Massa Marittima, a three minute drive from Ghirlanda, is the enchanting Sleeping Beauty of Tuscany. After a period of medieval prosperity, threatened by the Maremma marshes, Massa Marittima was almost depopulated. But since the recultivation of the region, the well-preserved city has shown itself in new splendour: as a visual treat for strollers interested in history.
Defensive castle fortress, great panorama
A staircase leads to the upper town of Massa Marittima with its imposing fortress and the magnificent Piazza Garibaldi, which is dominated by the palaces of the Podestà and the Priors and the imposing Romanesque-Gothic building of the cathedral. Sienese conquerors built the castle to secure their sphere of influence over the hill town. A visit to the clock tower is a must, because from here you have a wonderfully wide view over the gentle chains of hills to the blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea. A museum housed in a tunnel provides information about the mining industry that brought about the prosperity of Massa Marittima.
The magic word of Massa Marittima: deceleration
A lovely feature of Massa Marittima is the largest turtle village in Europe, which is located in the village. But it's not just these peaceful animals that take it easy on the magical hilltop: Massa Marittima is a member of the Cittàslow movement, an association of communities dedicated to slowing down. Twice a year, in May and August, the medieval-inspired crossbow competitions are held in Massa Marittima. If you have the opportunity, you should not miss a visit to these colorful and exuberant festivals.
All you need at Massa Marittima
Not only will you find a dozen lovely, mostly traditional restaurants and trattorias lining the historic streets of Massa Marittima, there are also two well equipped, large and modern supermarkets where you can buy all the wonderful Italian ingredients you could ever dream of.
The Maremma is a beautiful landscape in central Italy. It is located in the province of Grosseto, which stretches along the unspoiled coastal region over 130 km to the peninsula of Monte Argentario and up to the highest mountain in Tuscany, Monte Amiata.
Maremma - enchanting coastal landscape in Tuscany
In this region, the largely dried out swamp area, you will find a very varied, untouched, natural landscape. Super beautiful sandy beaches located directly on the pine forest, which are characterized by their cleanliness and the above-average water quality of the turquoise blue sea. Particularly popular are the natural Maremma beach in Marina di Grosseto, Cala Violina in Saclino, the beaches of Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia, Talamone and Prinicipina di Mare.
In addition, the Parco Regionale della Maremma, a nature park of almost 10,000 hectares, which is also located directly on the sea and offers nature lovers a wide variety of animal species, vegetation, etc.
The provincial capital of Grosseto, which was built in the Middle Ages, is the center of the Maremma and offers plenty of sights. The medieval buildings (the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the neo-Gothic Palace of the Provincial Government and the Franciscan Church), the small bars and restaurants with the authentic cuisine of the Maremma contribute to being able to really enjoy the flair of the Maremma. The hilly landscapes covered with olive groves and vineyards, cypress avenues and thermal springs etc. round off the diverse face of the Maremma.
